Drawing Ashes in England was ‘disappointing’: Steve Smith

Steve Smith, the number one ranked Australian test batsman, has picked Test wins in England and India as the “two big mountains” that he wants to climb before the end of his Test career.

Australia’s star batsman Steve Smith says he wants to win the Ashes in England and the Test series in India before retiring from cricket.

The two biggest hurdles for any Australian team are to win a test series in England and India. Australia last won in both these nations in 2001 and 2004 respectively.

From that point forward the nearest that Australia has come to scripting a win in England and India was during their past visits in 2019 and 2017 individually while they drew in England 2-2 to hold the Ashes they ran Virat Kohli’s men close in 2017.

“They’re the two big mountains to climb. If you can do that, it would be pretty special, hopefully, I get another crack at it, we’ll see how we go,” Steve Smith said.

Smith had an outstanding performance in this series and scored 774 runs in four Tests. However, he was ruled out of the third Test due to injury to the head of Joffre Archer’s bouncer. Smith said he was very disappointed not to win the Ashes and it was incomplete for him.

He said, “I think this is incomplete work. It is pleasant to retain the ashes but it is not right for me till you win it. We drew the series, which is right but not the best”.

Smith, who scored 7227 runs in 73 Tests with 26 centuries, said,”I’m getting a bit old now, You never know how long I’ve got left, and you never know what the future holds. However, it’s absolutely something to strive for, that is without a doubt,” Steve added.

Australia will host India for a four-match test series later this year followed by England in the next summer where they will hope to once again retain the Ashes it may be in 2022-2023 when the Aussies will venture out to India and afterward England that Smith will get another shot at fulfilling his desire.
