Northamptonshire’s David Capel passes away at 57: Sorrow for England Cricket

The World has been witnessing so many heartbreaking demises in the current pandemic scenario. The hard times did not spare anyone at all. On 2 September Cricket lost one of the players to a long illness. 

David Capel, the all-rounder who played for England and Northamptonshire passed away on Wednesday. David Capel, in 2018 was diagnosed with a brain tumor and fought with it for a really long time. Unfortunately, he could not chase the illness and left us at the age of 57.

About Capel 

Capel was an English all-rounder who has played 15 test matches, 23 One Day Internationals, and 323 matches in First Class Cricket. Capel’s FC debut was in 1981 which was against Sri Lanka. He has scored more than 12,000 runs in First-Class cricket and picked up as many as 546 wickets. 

His first appearance in test format internationally was in 1987 against Pakistan. As he was an all-rounder he came out in the middle order. In his very first international test match, he came to bat at five down scoring just 31, he was successful to get a half-century with a bowling attack like Wasim Akram and Imran Khan.

Capel has also been successful in dismissing a player like Vivian Richards who is one of the best Jamaican batsmen. His highest score in red-ball matches is 98 which he scored in his 4th game against Pakistan. 

Capel’s Retirement 

Capel retired from his cricket playing career in 1998. He then went on as a coach for many teams. In 1999, he was appointed as the club’s Director of Excellence. In May 2020, David Capel’s name was registered in the Hall of Fame in Northamptonshire. 

In 2006, he signed up as a head coach for the Northamptonshire team. For England’s Women Cricket team he has served as an assistant coach. Not just for his country but he has also coached as a head coach for the Women Cricket team of Bangladesh.

The Chief Executive Officer of the England Cricket Board expressed his shock and sorrow. He said that Capel was one of the most enthusiastic players he has played with who was unbeaten. It’s very sad and, his friends are going to miss their friendship very hard.
