Rashid Khan Says No To The T20 Captaincy Of Afghanistan

The Afghanistan Cricket Board has appointed Hashmatullah Shahidi as their ODI captain for the 50 over format, and they have sacked Asghar Afghan from the ODI captaincy. In the captaincy of the shortest format, Rashid Khan is the man for that job. But the lead spinner has not accepted the offer to lead the Afghanistan Team in the T20I matches.

Rashid Khan is the vice-captain of the Afghanistan team, and he doesn’t want to captain the side because he thinks that captaincy might affect his performance.

Khan aims to do well for his team, and he feels that his performance is crucial, which can be burdened if he takes up the captaincy role. Moreover, Rashid doesn’t want to wear too many hats simultaneously in the form of the captaincy role because the role requires much thinking on and off the field.

Khan was the captain of Afghanistan after the 2019 world cup. In his captaincy stint, Afghanistan won their first away test match against Bangladesh. However, Rashid also knew that captaincy was not a long-term option, and he told the board about his mindset, which is why Rashid Khan is still the team’s vice-captain.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board has three captains, with Rashid leading the Test side, Gulbadin Naib is the captain of the T20 side, and Shahidi is the newly appointed captain of the ODI side. But Rashid Khan says that the shift in the captaincy of the ODI format will not affect the players because each of them has been assigned a role.

The players know the responsibility as the team members, and none of them is thinking about captaincy because they aim to contribute in every situation as players and back every player in tough situations. As Rashid said, it is all about togetherness and no just about one or two cricket players.
