What Is Tea Break Time In Test Cricket

Every match has refreshment breaks for the players to refresh themselves as playing uninterruptedly for 7 hours can be straining for them.

A normal Test match sticks to the typical three sessions rule with a break after every session.

There are two types of break namely lunch break and tea break. They differ in the sense that the timings of the breaks vary.

How Long Are Lunch And Tea Breaks In Test Cricket?

While a typical lunch break lasts for 40 minutes, a tea break is only for 20 minutes.

Considering that the match begins at 9:00 below is the sample schedule for test match day.

The match begins at 09:00.

The first session or the morning session is held from 09:00 to 11:00.

After the First session Lunch break is given which lasts from11:00 from 11:40.

After the lunch break, the game is resumed and its second session also known as the afternoon session is conducted from 11:40 to 13: 40.

After the second session, a tea break is given which typically lasts for 20 minutes i.e. from 13:40 to 14:00.

After tea break, the third session or evening session begins from 14:00 and lasts till 16:00.

Extra time is allotted in case the fielding team fails to complete 90 overs, which lasts from 16:00 to 16:30.

Due to unforeseeable circumstances, these timings can be adjusted.

How Long Are Lunch And Tea Breaks In a Day/Night Test?

The only change that we get to witness in these matches concerning breaks is that instead of a lunch break a dinner break is taken because they begin in the afternoon.

Considering that the match begins at 13:30 below is the sample schedule of a typical match day.

The match begins at 13:30.

The first session or the Afternoon session is held from 13:30 to 15:30.

After the First session dinner break is given which lasts from 15:30 to 16:10.

After the lunch break, the game is resumed and its Second session or Evening session is conducted

from 16:10 to 18:10.

After the second session, a tea break is given which typically lasts for 20 minutes i.e. from 18:10 to 18:30.

After tea break, the Third session, or Night session begins from 18:30 and lasts till 20:30.

Extra time is allotted in case the fielding team fails to complete 90 overs, which lasts from 20:30 to 21:00.

How Long Are Lunch And Tea Breaks In a Day/Night Test Match In India?

In a day/night test match in India, breaks can be contrasting in order depending on the venue. There have been instances when dinner and tea breaks were swapped.

Even in the third Test match which was held between India and England, a tea break was taken before the dinner break.

Considering that the match begins at 14:30 below is the sample schedule of a typical match day.

The match begins at 14:30.

The first session or the Afternoon session is held from 14:30 to 16:30.

After the First session tea break is given which lasts from 16:30 to 16:50.

After the lunch break, the game is resumed and its second session also known as the evening session is conducted from 16:50 to 18:50.

After the second session, a dinner break is given which typically lasts for 40 minutes i.e. from 18:50 to 19:30.

After tea break, the Third session, or Night session begins from 19:30 and lasts till 21:30.

Extra time is allotted in case the fielding team fails to complete 90 overs, which lasts from 21:30 to 22:00.
