IPL 2021 – Prithvi Shaw grueling five days with Pravin Amre, which lifted him back again

The Delhi Capitals’ opening batsman, Prithvi Shaw, had started the IPL 2021 season with a bang. Shaw showed a great show in the first game, where he played a match-winning knock of 72 runs against Chennai Super Kings in their opening encounter at Mumbai last week.

India’s former cricketer and well-known commentator Sunil Gavaskar had praised Prithvi Shaw for his fireworks against CSK in the first game. Mr. Gavaskar was impressed with Shaw’s shot, which he played against Shardul Thakur, the CSK fast bowler.

That shot went between the third man and backward point. Gavaskar said that if anyone could control the bat speed while playing this cracking shot, the sky is limited. Gavaskar was also the one who criticized Shaw after he failed to deliver in the first test match of the Border Gavaskar Trophy.

Gavaskar said that Shaw is pushing at the deliveries, and there is a gap between his bat and pad. Sunny also pointed out that Shaw was playing with his hard hands. India lost the Adelaide test match, and Prithvi Shaw was out of the remaining test matches of that tour. Shaw was not the part of the home series against England as well.

But before the series in Australia, his DC franchise dropped Shaw in the reaming matches of the IPL 2020 season. Shaw had an average of under 13, and DC coach and former Aussie captain Ricky Pointing that Shaw wasn’t training in the nets.

Shubman Gill was the obvious replacement to Prithvi Shaw in the Test matches for India. Now Gill has cemented his place for the longer version of the game. Prithvi had a short Test career that is being questioned about his technique, temperament, and physical fitness.

In the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Shaw had shattered the records, and he allowed his team to win a title. Shaw scored 800 runs, which is the most in Vijay Hazare Trophy, and no one has scored that many runs in that tournament earlier. Shaw has replicated the same form in the first match of the IPL 2021 season.

Pravin, the well-known coach of Mumbai, has known Prithvi Shaw for ages. Amre has seen Prithvi Shaw’s struggles and worked with him mentally and technically during the offseason to make Shaw match ready for the IPL 2021 season.

Amre has also worked with Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav earlier. These two youngsters have played for India, and they seem to be a regular fit in the team.

Amre said to Shaw that this season of the IPL is a make or break for him, keeping the mega auction of IPL 2022 in mind. Amir will not hamper Shaw’s naturally aggressive technique. Amre and Shaw’s drills in Shivaji Park allowed Amre to see Shaw’s batting through different angles.

Amre found that Shaw wasn’t playing his full face of the bat, and they focused on those drills. In IPL 2020, there were no many wicket-taking deliveries which got Prithvi out. There was an error in shot selection, foot movement, and shot execution. He also had bad footwork and hand position, so he was bowled and caught behind most of the time.

Shaw’s high backlift also comes to the scanner. Amre pointed the problems when the bat used to come down. Amre worked to improve the faults, which would improve his high backlift, and he would drive the ball like a golf player. Shaw also practised in the room in front of the mirror which allowed Shaw to see how the bat used to come down.

The other issue with Shaw was that he wasn’t moving his feet, and he couldn’t transfer his weight as well. The drills which Amre did with Shaw helped him to move his feet quickly.

Shaw also analyzed himself on his feet movements and how the bat is coming close to the body, and on the final day of that training, Shaw also hit a few shots with confidence which let him down during IPL 2020 season.

Shaw challenged to bat in a certain way during the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Amre told him to bat for at least 100 balls. His match-winning knock against CSK was because of the training with Pravin Amre. Shaw has been confident in hitting sixes to a player like Ravindra Jadeja. Those shots which Shaw hit in the game against CSK were because of the confidence and improved technique.
