Women’s World Cup Saw 7 Balls In One Over Without Any Wide Or No Ball

Omaima Sohail could breathe a sigh of relief, thinking that South African batsman Sean Luce could not score more than one run. If it had been four or six, Omaima would have been in a bad mood, for sure! Who wants to digest four-six due to the mistake of the umpire.

The umpire forgot to count the number of balls during the over. The bowler bowled seven balls instead of six in one over. This is an unprecedented event in the Women’s Cricket World Cup match between South Africa and Pakistan.

Notably, there was no no ball or wide in this over. All seven deliveries were valid. But due to the umpire’s mistake, the Pakistani bowler bowled an extra ball. However, the ICC has not yet opened its mouth about the incident. The umpire was not punished.

The incident happened during the 28th over of the South African innings. Omaima Sohail of Pakistan was bowling. Sune Luce and Laura Ulvert were batting. Seven runs were scored in the first five balls of the over. The umpire caught Luce on the sixth ball. But the South African captain came back to life after the review. This is where the trouble is. Omaima bowled another ball in that over, which was pushed to the long-on by Luce.

Pakistan lost the match by only 6 runs. But if it weren’t for Omaima’s seventh run, the gap would have been one-run less.

Luis (62) and Wolverton (65) scored well in South Africa. She made 223 runs for 9 wickets. Fatima-Ghulam and Sana took three wickets each for Pakistan. Pakistan was bowled out for 216 in the second innings.

Omaimai (65) with Nahida Khan (40) and later Nida Dar (55) raised hopes of Pakistan’s victory. But none of the others succeeded with the bat. Shabnim Ismail (3 wickets), Marijane Cup (2), and Ayabonga Khaka (2) combined to block Pakistan’s first win of the tournament.
